Lovely affordable hotel, very accomodating and friendly owners. We arrived with bicycles and were able to store them in a shed overnight. Great fish and chips too! Would definitely recommend.

Spent a weekend here while on a jet boating trip.
Great place! if your visiting Hokitika make sure you book in and stay with Grant and Debbie. Awesome food and great hospitality. Absolutely outstanding!

Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club stayed there last weekend. Very good value accommodation; rooms clean and warm. Brand new showers etc. Buffet meal Saturday night was spectacularly good. Nice to be able to use the guest kitchen for a communal breakfast for our group Sunday morning. Our thanks to all at Kaniere Hotel.

Amazing value for a single room. Clean and comfortable. Spotless bathrooms and a well equipped kitchen with a lot of complimentary foodstuffs. Grant was very welcoming. Plenty of off-street parking too.

Loved this place. When we first arrived I thought to myself… gosh this doesn’t look appealing
But it had a totally homely feeling about it. We both loved it. Would stay there again.
There was tea and coffee provided… bowl of fruit… friendly as service

Fantastic accommodation option only 10 minutes drive from Lake Kanaire. Expect a warm West Coast welcome from Grant the owner. Comfortable rooms with shared facilities. Everything fastidiously clean. Really fast internet. Will definitely be back.

I loved it! The place is spotlessly clean. The hosts put me at ease immediately. The shower pressure is great 👍. It’s got a cosy little lounge and kitchen for guests. The Wilderness Cycle Trail is 5 meters away on the other side of the road. More cyclists should use it.

Probably the best value stay I’ve had in a long time. Clean facilities, comfy and quiet enough (yes it’s on a main road, but it didn’t really bother me). All the basics covered in the kitchen (coffee, tea, milk) which is super generous. Honestly, I don’t think you can get better value than this (particularly as a solo traveller).

I was on a motorcycle holiday in the South Island and travelling on a budget. I found this place on the web booked a bed, ended up with my own room for the same price. This is an old West Coast country pub on the outskirts of Hokitika. Beds were comfortable, rooms clean and there was ample tea and coffee available.
The hotel had washing machine soap powder and dryer available for a small fee. Evening meals were available at very reasonable prices. Bar opened at around 4pm and the locals and staff were welcoming. I enjoyed this stop over and will do it again. No need to spend a fortune on accommodation and meals when this good old fashioned country hospitality is available

This is a great location. There are any number of activities to do in the area. It is close to Hokitika town which has all the supplies you need. Here you are close to the sea and also the mountains. Nearby Lake Kaniere is a gem. This hotel does excellent food and well priced drinks. The hotel is relaxed.

This place has been one of my “locals” for years. I enjoying heading down to the Kaniere Hotel and I think the staff are great. Thats why I keep going back !!
Of course they have my favourite beer on tap and the staff are always at the ready to make sure you have all you need.
It has a nice atmosphere, a country pub feel, being comfortable with a great fire on those cold nights.
Every Thursday they have an open mic “Jam Night” and you just never know who will turn up to play some tunes. Sometimes its quiet, with a couple of country style songs and other times its a full on assortment of instruments and music genre. Random!

Anyway .. its worth while checking out for food, drinks and a place to stay, more so if you want somewhere out of the Hokitika hubbub or your just going past.

One of the best experiences we had in our 5 week South Island trip. Dropped in on Christmas night hungry and thirsty and were welcomed with genuine conversation, delicious food, and great beer. Thanks!!

Location is amazing, so close to the river. There is a little park for doggy walks if you are travelling with your companion animals. Petrol station is near by, too for those who might need to refill before they travel further. The place is amazingly clean, when I saw the bathrooms I thought – I wish every place had this kind of bathrooms! The room was very cozy, neat and again very clean. That was exactly what I needed in the end of my long day. I traveled with my two little foxies and hosts very happy to have us all. Thank you so much for providing such an exceptional accomodation!!!

Loved the classic Kiwi pub hotel, hosts were super friendly & helpful, little unexpected surprises like a fresh bowl of fruits in the common lounge. And best of all the friendly big German shepherd doggy!

Always a good place to stay in a very interesting area of the West Coast. It is handy this accommodation is a pub with very good food served on site and parking out the back with separate guest entrance.

I checked in this hotel today. The room was not expensive so obviously had shared toilet and of course shared kitchen. I was amazed how clean and managed was the shared kitchen, shared toilets and common lounge room. Very comfortable room and comfortable bed. I am very happy with the staff/owner, very very friendly. Has a bar so you can have fun there. I am satisfied with my stay at this hotel. 😮 😎

The room was nice and clean, and the meals were excellent, a nice friendly West Coast country pub, brilliant in all respects I will stay here. Again this was my second stay and enjoyed it very much.

I hopped off the Stray Bus in Hokitika to do a bit of jade carving but my last minute planning style had me looking a long way out of town for accom on the weekend.

Just up the river in Kaniere, The Empire is a hidden gem. Well out of reach of most of the tourists and holiday makers, the bar and dining area hosts a lively bunch of locals for happy hour. They have name tags written on jade and they’re laughing around the bar, as I eat the Sunday Special prepared in house – a plate of delicious roast lamb and traditional veg – with a jug for 30 bucks?! Can’t beat it.

The hosts, Grant and Debbie, even helped me resolve a booking issue caused by a third party site. They’re friendly, and accommodating. The rooms are clean and comfortable. All things considered, I’ll be sad to move back in to the backpacker’s tomorrow.

Thanks for a great stay!

We wanted the true Kiwi hotel/tavern experience and got it! Our room was comfortable, the kitchen facilities excellent and the guest lounge is a good place to relax if you don’t want to join the bar scene. But we did, and had a great time meeting some of the locals during happy hour. The Kaniere Empire’s cheaper than most places in Hokitika and on route to the beautiful gorge. Good budget accommodation with friendly and accommodating owners.
